COMMIT YOUR WAY...
"Commit your way to the Lord; Trust him, and he will act."
- Psalm 37:5 -As a teenager, during a meeting of young people, I answered an appeal to dedicate our lives to the service of God and of His Church. From that moment, I decided to prepare myself to work directly for the Church.
I knew that my vocation was not pastoral ministry, but I was drawn to the idea of becoming a teacher of secondary education in an Adventist school. However, my prospects for working in a denominational school in Portugal were virtually nil, because there was only a primary school in Lisbon. However, I was not discouraged and I continued to prepare through my university education.
Shortly before marriage, a pastor who was a missionary in Mozambique and was on holiday in Portugal at that time, visited the church to which I belonged; he was invited to lead in the worship.
Naturally, he talked about the educational work in that African country and of the great need for teachers at the Adventist Secondary School of Beira.
At the end of the service, I talked a bit with the missionary about the possibility of going to teach at that school. After a brief exchange of views, the feeling grew in me that God could open a door to the realization of the decision taken in my teens.

A few months later, having already married and almost finished military service and university studies, I spoke with the president of the Adventist Church in Portugal to enquire about the possibility of going to Mozambique as missionary teachers. Imagine our astonishment when he informed us that the Portuguese Union would soon open a secondary school in the north of Portugal and that if we were willing to serve the Church, we could do so in our own country.
The decision was not very difficult to make, not only because the ideia of being useful in Portugal was more attractive to us, but also because it had become inconceivable to work in Mozambique. The truth is that the revolution of April 1974 had just taken place and the political situation in that country had undergone tremendous changes. Mozambique gained independence and almost the entire European population was forced to return to Portugal.
This is how I started my teaching career at an Adventist school in my own country. Today, I thank God for the joy of having worked there for almost thirty years.
The moment I decided to serve the Church as teacher, there was no Adventist secondary school in Portugal or any prospects for it to come into being, but I was blessed to see the promise of Psalm 37:5 fulfilled in my life:

"Entrega o teu caminho ao Senhor, confia n’Ele e Ele tudo fará."
- Salmos 37:5 -Quando era ainda adolescente, durante um encontro de jovens, respondi a um apelo para que dedicássemos a nossa vida ao serviço de Deus e da Sua Igreja. Desde esse momento decidi preparar-me para trabalhar diretamente na Igreja.
Sabia que a minha vocação não era o ministério pastoral, mas sentia-me atraído pela ideia de vir a ser um professor do ensino secundário numa escola adventista. No entanto, as perspetivas de trabalhar numa escola denominacional em Portugal eram praticamente nulas, pois só havia uma escola primária em Lisboa. Contudo, não desanimei e continuei a minha preparação universitária.
Pouco tempo antes de casar, um pastor, que era missionário em Moçambique e que nessa altura se encontrava de férias em Portugal, fez uma visita à igreja a que eu pertencia, tendo sido convidado para dirigir o culto de Sábado. Naturalmente falou sobre a obra educativa naquele país africano e na grande carência de professores que se sentia na Escola Secundária Adventista da Beira.
No final do culto, conversei um pouco com o missionário acerca da possibilidade de vir a lecionar naquela escola e, depois dessa breve troca de impressões, ficou dentro de mim a sensação de que Deus poderia estar a abrir uma porta para a concretização da decisão tomada na minha adolescência.

Alguns meses mais tarde, já depois de ter casado e quase a terminar o serviço militar e os estudos universitários, falei com o presidente da Igreja Adventista em Portugal para lhe pedir algumas informações sobre a possibilidade de irmos como professores missionários para Moçambique. Qual não foi o nosso espanto, quando ele nos informou de que em breve a União abriria uma escola secundária no norte de Portugal e que, se estávamos dispostos a servir a Igreja, também o poderíamos fazer no nosso próprio país.
A decisão não foi muito difícil de tomar, não só porque nos atraía mais a ideia de sermos úteis em Portugal, mas também se tornara impensável ir trabalhar para Moçambique. A verdade é que acabara de acontecer a revolução de Abril de 1974 e a situação política naquele país sofrera tremendas alterações. Moçambique adquiriu a independência e quase toda a população europeia se viu forçada a regressar a Portugal.
Foi assim que comecei a minha carreira docente numa escola adventista no nosso país. Hoje, agradeço a Deus a alegria de aí ter trabalhado quase trinta anos.
No momento em que tomei a decisão de servir a Igreja como professor, não havia nenhuma escola secundária adventista em Portugal, nem perspetivas de vir a existir, mas tive a bênção de ver cumprida na minha vida a promessa de Salmos 37:5,
